Harihan was born in Bombay on 3rd April 1955. He is the son of renowned Carnatic vocalists Ananthasubramani. His mother was his first guru. He got Carnatic music skills from her. He was inspired by Mehdi Hassan in his early days and developed a liking for ghazals. He then got training from Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Hariharan also learned Urdu to become a ghazal singer. He sang for some TV serials and concerts. He has got several successful ghazal albums. Hariharan's first ghazal album was Abshaar-e-Ghazal with Asha Bhonsle which was a huge hit. Another outstanding ghazal album was Gulfam which in 1994 makes him get the Diva Award for the Best Album of the Year. Hariharan won the national award for the best playback singer for the the song mere dost mere bhai from movie Border. His fusion album Colonial Cousins with Bombay-based composer/singer Leslie Lewis was the first Indian act featured on MTV Unplugged and it won a lot of awards. His recent Ghazal album Lahore ke rang Hari ke sang with ghazal composers from Pakistan got him rave reviews and critical acclaim. He also worked with tabla maestro Zakir Hussain in album Haazir. Hariharan has a distinctive style of his own.
