Jagjit Singh & Chitra Singh

The Ghazal King Jagjit Singh is one of the most well known Ghazal Singer in the world today. Chitra Singh is a famous ghazal singer wife of Jagjit Singh but she later gave up singing after the untimely death of their son.

Jagjit Singh was born in Ganganagar, Rajasthan. He learnt music from Pandit Chaganlal Sharma and spent 6 years to learn the Indian classical music from Ustad Jamaal Khan of the Sainia gharana. He came to Mumbai in 1965 for better opportunities. He had to live as a paying guest in his early days. Jagjit Singh sung advertisement jingles and performed at weddings and parties in his early days.

He has done many solo albums, duet album with Chitra and Lata Mangeshkar.. His songs like Tumko dekha to yeh khayal aya, Baat Nicklegi To Door Talak Jayegi and Woh Kagaz Ki Kashti are few of his best ghazals. He has got the Padma Bhushan in 2003.

Jagjit Singh is considered as the pioneer of transforming ghazals by simplifying the form for common people. He is accredited with popularisation of the ghazal among the masses.
